REGIONAL PARTICULARITIES OF THE UNPAID WORK IN SLOVAKIA

Abstract

Unpaid work plays an important role in the life of individuals, households and the whole society. In spite of this fact, there has not been any official statistical research conducted in Slovakia concerning unpaid work till now. In 2012, interdisciplinary team of researchers from the Faculty of Economics, Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia conducted unique original primary research on the unpaid work. The aim of the research was to complete information about the extent, structure and economic and non-economic motives of the unpaid work carried out in Slovak households. Data were collected not only on national level, but also on the level of particular regions according to Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics NUTS 3. Research confirmed that unpaid work in Slovakia covers approximately 30 % of Gross Domestic Product. This result is similar to the extent of the unpaid work determined in other countries of the European Union and word. On the other side, there are many regional particularities of the unpaid work that are influenced by the local traditions, style and standard of living, composition of population by age, sex and education as well as structure of households. The aim of this paper is to present results of our unique research, with regard to the importance, extent and structure of unpaid work in Slovak regions, as well as possible reasons of differences between them. Besides other particularities, we stress importance of regional unemployment rate as one of the main macroeconomic characteristic and differentiation factor. Within the research, we questioned 1559 households and 4435 individuals. Research was adequate and representative according to the gender, age (three age categories) and place of living (regions) of respondents – individuals and according to number of members and place of living of households. To analyse research data we used methods of statistical interference and correlation analysis. We also evaluated extent of unpaid work in money term according to the input method and by using statistical data related to the wages and employment categories in Slovak regions. Results included in this article show importance and extent of unpaid work in Slovak regions with regard to the different regional macroeconomic characteristics and necessity to consider unpaid work as part of regional development and product.1
