PRINCIPLES CONCERNING THE EDUCATION OF THE YOUNG REFLECTED IN SAINT BASIL OF CAESAREA'S HOMILY TO THE YOUNG
Abstract
Understood as a set of actions, applied systematically for the training and development of the people's intellectual, moral or physical skills, education represents an essential means of developing characters and personalities. We cannot speak of culture, or of civilization without education. In spite of the fact that some voices state that the Christian religion is non-cultural, the evidence shows the opposite, namely that Christianity has produced civilization - relying exactly on a certain “culture” of justice, good and beauty -, has defeated great Empires, has annihilated ideologies and has given a new appearance to Europe and not only to it. Despite some people who - out of ill will - will not see the truth, it is incontestable that Europe's cultural roots are essentially Christian. Thus, according to the Christian religion, in general, education is the main means leading us towards what we may call culture and evolution and civilization. This truth is illustrated by the history of the Christian Church, in its totality, and in our study, we will bring arguments to support this statement, by referring to one of the remarkable Fathers of the Christian Church of the first millennium, namely Saint Basil of Caesarea who, in his writing To the Young proves unequivocally how important education is for the edification of the human person.
