TEXT ANALYSIS OF THE OFFICIAL BRITISH DOCUMENT ADDRESSING THE PUBLIC (BASED ON THE OFFICIAL DEPARTMENTAL WEB SITES)
Abstract
The research aims at finding certain tendencies to language simplification in modern British society focusing on the changes in the official functional style (register). Lexical and syntactic peculiarities of the official document texts produced by three British social departments (Government Equalities Office, which is part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport; Department of Health; Department for Education) are analyzed in the work. In order to evaluate the complexity of grammar in the texts addressing the public and professional audience the following quantitative method was developed. It measures the number of auxiliary, notional and the general number of words in the sentences. It is assumed that there is a statistical correlation between the number of auxiliary words and the complexity of the sentence structure. Besides, a semantic analysis of lexical units showed that whenever possible a more neutral or informal word is used to present a notion in the texts addressing the public.
