THE ROMANIAN DEMOGRAPHIC SYSTEM – REGIONAL DISPARITIES AFTER 25 YEARS OF POST-COMMUNIST EVOLUTION
Abstract
Before 1989 Romania used to be a communist country with a centralized economy, the authorities deeply intervening in absolutely all the aspects of the individual, family and society life. From the demographic (and not only) point of view, the most intimate and brutal interference of the state took place by means of the famous Decree 770/1966 which almost completely prohibited abortions, doubling the birth rate in the attempt of complying with the communists' dream of having a numerous population, able to support and promote a strong economy. The change of the political regime in 1989 brought an end to the strongly coercive natalist policy but its effects continue to make themselves felt even 25 years after both from the demographic and economic perspective.
