INDUSTRIAL ARCHITECTURE IN BRATISLAVA – LINKING THE PAST TO THE PRESENT
Abstract
The paper addresses some of the general issues concerning industrial heritage and its values in a contemporary society via unique situation occurring in the Slovak capital of Bratislava, with an intention to emphasize the importance to conserve the remains of the industrial past as an integral part of our culture; not only according to the established architectural and heritage values, but equally addressing wider sociocultural aspects. The methodological approach applied in the research consists of an analysis of selected examples of industrial architecture in Bratislava which represent diverse historical periods, during which the city went through a major transformation. The necessary information has been acquired through field research, study of archive documents and plans, historical press and published literature. In addition, the findings are confronted with current theories in the relevant field. The major findings document how specific historical, political, economic and social changes can relate to the evaluation of particular industrial architecture and affect perceiving of its values. Examples from Bratislava—from a city with a specific historic situation characterized by multiple changes in the 20th century—illustrate the importance of not overlooking some of rather modest examples of industrial architecture, since these can represent in many cases a necessary connection to the past, that enables the historical context appear more legible, and as such more comprehensible also to a wider public. The research demonstrates how seemingly weakening factors concerning heritage conservation—which usually aims to select the most spectacular examples—can become assets if the viewpoint is shifted from a single expert field toward one that comes out of an interdisciplinary approach. This particular knowledge can become especially useful to argument a solution in heritage conservation that is generally more acceptable and therefore more sustainable.
