THE YOUTH ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND GENDER DIMENSION: LITHUANIAN CASE
Abstract
The economic development of each country strongly depends on the successfulness of the business. Due to this the article examines the small and medium enterprises (SME) in Lithuania's economy. The aim of the paper is to show what role youth employment plays in Lithuanian labor market and in the country's economy. Therefore the main aim of the paper is to make the analysis of youth labor market in the gender aspect and show its contribution to the Lithuanian economy. For the analysis the data from Lithuanian Department of Statistics, World Bank Data, and EUROSTAT databases for the year 2005-2012 are used. Global entrepreneurship development index for the evaluation of youth entrepreneurship in gender aspect is used. The analysis showed that youth entrepreneurship makes a considerable contribution solving youth unemployment problem and expanding economic development in Lithuania in the context of the European Union countries (EU-27) in the period of 2005-2012. In order to examine the youth entrepreneurship and its gender dimension the changes of unemployment level, of entrepreneurship characteristics in Lithuania according to age group and the level of entrepreneurial activity are analysed. Both absolute and relative amounts are compared. The method of base indicators (youth unemployment, the main entrepreneurship indicators) comparison is applied, whereas the first year (e.g., year 2005) of the analyzed period is chosen as base year. The intenseness causes and structure of the changes of youth labour market and entrepreneurship level is evaluated.
