ATTITUDES OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TO HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE IN FIELDS OF STUDY PRIMARILY ASSOCIATED WITH HEALTH PROMOTION
Abstract
The paper describes the results of a research study focusing on the attitudes of university students to health and lifestyle. The research method was an optimised version of ATER semantic differential standardized for the Czech population. The research study involved students from the Faculty of Education, Palacky University, Olomouc in fields of study primarily associated with health promotion at the turn of 2014 and 2015. These were students of the Bachelor's study Health education with a focus on education, follow-up Master's study Teaching health education and Teaching professional courses for secondary nursing schools. To measure their attitudes, the respondents were presented with the following concepts: Fellow students, Future, Money, Diet, Parents, Health education, Education, I, My relationships with people, Drugs, Interpersonal communication, Alcohol, Smoking, Physical health, Mental health, Risky sexual behaviour, Physical activity, Dependence on technologies (PC, mobile, Internet), My professional preparation, Friendship, Disease, Love, Healthy lifestyle, Lifestyle diseases, Mental stress, Obesity, Old age. The obtained data were used to develop a semantic space to observe the concepts in various groups of respondents. The differences between various groups were further compared by means of the Student's t-test and analysis of variance. The greatest overall differences were observed in the perception of the concept of “Disease”, which was relatively most positively evaluated by the students of the Bachelor's field of study Health education with a focus on education, and at the same time this concept was associated with the lowest degree of exerted energy of the monitored groups. Regarding the fact that the educational area of Man and Health is included in the Framework educational programme for preschool and basic education, and regarding the emphasis on health promotion in all stages of the educational system in the Czech Republic, we were also interested in the attitudes of students to the same concepts in other fields of study. Specifically, these were future teachers in kindergarten and elementary schools.
