A LOCAL STUDY OF JOB SATISFACTION FACTORS AMONG MEDICAL AND PARAMEDICAL PERSONNEL
Abstract
Job satisfaction (JS) can be more difficult to measure in the health field in view of the complexity of roles, duties and responsibilities. Objectives: To determine the psychometric properties of Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) for the medical field, with different job levels. Materials and Methods: A 20-item five-option Likerttype draft questionnaire on MSQ was distributed for anonymous self-reporting by medical and paramedical staff of two hospitals in the Arad County region of Romania (n=307). The outcome measures were factor analysis of the questionnaire items, intrafactor ?-Coefficient of Internal Consistency Reliability, inter-factor correlations, comparison of psychometric properties in the separate analysis of main employers subgroups. Results: The response rate was 92.9 percent. Factor analysis extracted eleven factors, labeled as extrinsic: "Authority", "Security", "Company Policies Practices", and intrinsic: "Social Service", "Ability utilisation", "Independence", "Moral Values", "Compensation", "Advancement", "Working Condition" and "Achievement". Cronbach's-? ranged from 0.873 in "Company Policies Practices" to 0.887 in "Security". All inter-factor correlations were positive and significant, ranging from 0.82 to 0.684. The psychometric properties of the instrument in the separately analyzed subgroups divided by sex, Job Description Index (JDI) and clinical duties produced fairly comparable findings. Conclusion: The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) demonstrated good overall psychometric properties in terms of construct validity and internal consistency reliability in both the overall sample and its separately analyzed subgroups. Recommendation: To replicate these findings in larger multicentre samples of medical and paramedical personnel.
