ADAPTATION OF FOREIGN STUDENTS IN THE SYSTEM OF HIGHER PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION IN RUSSIAN: TOMSK POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE
Abstract
The increased level of international contacts has led the education systems worldwide to further creation of the common international education space. The Russian higher education system, in its turn, following the modern tendencies continues providing foreign students with opportunities to study in Russia. Under the new conditions, the modern ways of improving the quality of education the foreign students get studying in Russia are being searched for. The pre-sessional stage of the higher education is thought one of the crucial aspects in laying the ground for further social adjustment of foreigners in the Russian society. The major tool for both such adjustment and the implied international cooperation is the use of the Russian language at the sufficient level. Tomsk Polytechnic University due to its location experience the same foreign student body as many universities in Siberian Federal District. The predominant Chinese or Vietnamese origin of foreign students being enrolled at District universities determines the specific work nature of the higher education institutions. The pre-sessional stage aims to help students from Asia-Pacific region to overcome those psychological barriers that appear through the lack of international cooperation. Here the authors distinguish the main categories of psychological barriers and present a number of techniques that minimize their impact on the teaching process. All the techniques provided fall under the two methodical principles of the adaptation process of foreign students at the pre-sessional stage. Both the methodical principles and the psychological barrier minimizing techniques have been successfully applied in Tomsk Polytechnic University in order to create the friendly environment for Asian-Pacific students at their pre-sessional stage of obtaining higher education.
