FIRST TIME MOTHER EXPERIENCE IN QUALITATIVE STUDIES – A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

The first weeks of motherhood represent a crucial period in life of a woman and a basis for developing mother – child relationship. ‘First time mother experience’ as an interdisciplinary issue is related to how the first time mother sees herself in a new role, how confident and competent she feels, what influences the process of attaining the new role. The aim of the present review is to provide an overview of current research on the first time mother experience in qualitative literature. Main keywords and phrases (becoming a mother, first time mother, transition to motherhood) were used to search for relevant papers in the available databases. Studies fulfilling the inclusion criteria were analyzed from the perspective of study design, sample characteristics, data analysis procedures. The study summarizes the main theoretical perspectives, crucial findings, practical implications, and future directions.
