Abstract

In the passage into the third millennium, mankind has gone through many changes. Among them or together with them was noticed the belying of the “forecasts” about “the end of religion”. One can feel even the need to re-evaluate the role and the functions of religion worldwide, at a beginning of millennium in which the existential void represents a phenomenon in the information chaos, the confusion of values is much greater, and the sense of life and of the family is increasingly threatened. In front of these things and of many others, moral-religious education comes to accomplish several functions: it brings answers to man’s existential questions, which refer to the relations among people, to the sense of the family, to the life after death etc.; it shows the identity of a people, the values of the culture and civilization it has created, throughout its existence; it highlights the importance of moral-religious cultivation for safeguarding the world peace. It is noted that there is no greater power worldwide than religion or which is able to unite as religion can. The religious phenomenon also has to do with the fact that man is a religious being, who is expressed by reference to the Divinity, and his thirst for perennial values is quenched in religious and spiritual manifestations.
