THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING AUTHENTIC FEATURE FILM IN TEACHING ENGLISH TO EFL STUDENTS

Abstract

The purpose of this work is to study new and more effective ways of teaching English to EFL students as the timeliness of the issue studied in this article is attributable to the high level of the English language proficiency which potential professionals are required to have due to high competitiveness in the context of the worldwide globalization. The article represents the analysis of advisability and effectiveness of using an authentic feature film in teaching English to EFL students of Kazan Federal University. The methodological framework developed in the study includes the assessment of the target audience’s level of foreign language proficiency; the stage of a film option or the tips how to choose a film correctly for certain students. The article also contains a list of practical activities which can be applied in the process of watching and comprehension of an authentic feature film and which are aimed at the development of such students’ skills as speaking and listening. The findings of this study have proved that teaching English to EFL students is one of the most effective methods as it improves listening comprehension, speaking abilities as well as broadens students’ vocabulary and makes their speech fluent. Besides, learning English through watching foreign films has enormous impact on cultural views and beliefs of students about a foreign country and the world. Finally, it may be concluded that the research demonstrates the high potential of using an authentic feature film at English language classes for pedagogical science and English language teaching methodology in general. The results of the article have been effectively used as part of the English language teaching program to improve listening and speaking skills of EFL students of Kazan Federal University. It can be also used for everybody who is interested in effective and modern ways of teaching and learning foreign languages.
