PROGRESS OR REGRESS? MUSIC EDUCATION IN SLOVAKIA IN THE 21 CENTURY IN THE CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC CONTEXT
Abstract
The aim of the research has been to examine correlations and discrepancies between music education and major developmental trends in cultural and artistic production (music and multimedia) in Slovakia in the 21st century. Regarding its methodology, the research has been based on the methods of qualitative paradigms (analytical-synthetic, interpretative and comparative). Available results and statistical data of the quantitative research have been also used. The article argues that music education in Slovakia can be described as progressive if examined in the context of the innovative activities in art and culture. In case of the use of modern technologies, however, a different situation is observed. From this perspective, music education does not respond to the new trends in modern technologies effectively, even though a few innovative theoretical and practical attempts and activities can be identified. Presentation of the research results highlights the features of stagnation in music education in Slovakia and exposes the drawbacks related to contemporary trends in culture and arts. It suggests that changes are necessary not only in the field of the music-pedagogical thought but also in music education. Specific attention is paid to integration which is considered the cornerstone of current artistic and music-educational activity. The article also presents progressive activities of teachers which represent a meaningful connection between the theory and practice of music education.
