WHAT IS THE METROPOLITAN ARCHITECTURE?
Abstract
This article is focused on the role of architectural design in metropolitan spatial structures. Iconic architecture located at the nodes of the metropolitan urban network strengthen the quality of its public spaces and crystallize some of them into polycentric sub-centers of the metropolitan structure. The article proposes a matrix of relations between problems and their scales as a tool for analytical research, which focuses on the metropolitan structure of Krakow. These relations can be used to help explain the mechanisms of changes in a particular place's urban characteristics and importance, especially in terms of the influence and impact that an urban structure exerts or can exert, provided that additional criteria are met. The results of this research illustrate the issues of integrating spatial structures, such as the interplay of various beneficial or negative phenomena, which, by being present on the different scales that are presented, can propel or hamper the growth of an area into an urban network node. It also illustrates that the issues surrounding this topic are multi-layered and interdisciplinary and cannot and should not be taken out of a wider context, which can oftentimes put an entirely different perspective on the findings of a more focused research approach.
