DEVELOPMENT OF A QUESTIONNAIRE TO ASSESS COMMUNICATION STYLES IN COUPLE RELATIONSHIPS
Abstract
This paper unfolds the process of the development and testing of a questionnaire designed to investigate the communication styles in couple relationships. An extensive literature review was conducted previously to questionnaire design. The tool comprises 32 items rated on a five-point Likert scale ranging from total agree to total disagree. The items are grouped in 4 scales corresponding to four communication styles: assertive, manipulative, aggressive and passive. 8 items load on each scale. The first version of the instrument was tested qualitatively. During focus groups and in-depth interviews, the items were tested for clarity and redundancy. After the initial refining of the items, the questionnaire was tested on a sample of 70 subjects. The reliability of the scales was measured by computing the Cronbach alfa coefficient. For every scale, the coefficient is greater than 0.75, which can be considered good to very good values. Confirmatory factor analysis have showed a good fit to the proposed four-factor structure.
