After the military collapse of Romania, in the Autumn of 1916, the entire country - except a small part of Moldavia, with Ia?i as main city - fell under Central Powers occupation. Dobrudja was invaded by German and Bulgarian troops and divided. Bulgaria take Southern Dobrudja (lost as a consequence of the second Balkan war, from 1913) and the administration of the rest of the province, for a short time, followed by an effective German administration.
