Abstract. The paper explores the cold as a vital attribute of civilisation. The authors criticise the common understanding of the cold as a source of misery, and the North as a place of primitiveness and backwardness. On the basis of the method of „Wissen-schaftslehre“ by J.G. Fichte, the authors produce the idea of the existence of the collec-tive superconsciousness of the northerners that specifically expresses the freedom.
