The paper presents the criteria for assessing primary scientific genres written by master’s students. The criteria and scoring developed in accordance with students’ needs, curricular goals, level of EFL students’ proficiency and genre variety are adapted to the scale of assessment used at Novosibirsk State Technical University, Russia. The notions of primary scientific genre and subgenre are defined. The model of primary scientific genres are proposed.
